FIELDTRIP IN GREECE WITH COHORT 4
Cohort 4 students visited the island of Mytilini in Greece. Here is a feedback of their experience.
From June 24 to 29, 2024, PANGEA students from the 3 tracks had the opportunity to visit Lesvos, one of the three largest islands of Greece. An island whose treasures are hidden in the land, Mytilène left numerous learnings and discoveries for the Cohort 4 students.
Here is what they had to say about it:
"This fieldtrip has been tremendously beneficial for my future academic career. I am on the Geoconservation track, focusing on how to protect geoparks and utilize their geological and biological resources for geotourism. During this fieldtrip, we not only learned about how the LESVOS ISLAND UNESCO Global Geopark manages geoconservation but also witnessed how they integrate geological, ecological, and cultural heritage resources to develop geotourism initiatives. These experiences have been particularly inspiring for my future studies and research." (Zhongya - Geoconservation track, China).

"Lesvos is entirely a second to none island where Geo-heritages and nature live together peacefully. A marvelous place to learn and at the same time a perfect island to enjoy the beauty of Lesvos." (Kibrom - Applied paleontology, Ethiopia)
"Spending time at Lesvos Island UNESCO Global Geopark has been nothing short of incredible. The diverse geological features, combined with rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes, made my visit an unforgettable experience. I had the opportunity to explore the famous petrified forest, marvel at the volcanic formations, and learn about the unique biodiversity that thrives in this region.
The geoconservation projects being carried out here are truly inspiring, showcasing a commitment to preserving this natural heritage for future generations. The efforts to protect and promote the geological treasures of Lesvos not only enhance our understanding of Earth's history but also contribute significantly to sustainable tourism and local community development.
I am already looking forward to the day I can return to Lesvos Geopark and continue exploring its many wonders. This visit has deepened my appreciation for the importance of geoconservation and the vital role such initiatives play in safeguarding our planet's diverse geological heritage.
Thank you Master PANGEA for the opportunity." (Aminu - Geoconservation, Nigeria)

"The field trip to Lesvos Island in Greece, situated in the beautiful Aegean Sea, was an exceptional opportunity to make numerous observations in one place. Guided by the expertise of Prof. Nickolas Zouros, our site visits led to fruitful discussions, deepening our understanding of the island’s scientific marvels (Petrified Forest, geomorphological sites, geological structures, wetlands, thermal springs, flora, and fauna). The comprehensive field encompassed geological, biodiversity, natural, and cultural aspects, which made it an amazing learning experience. It was a perfect blend of scientific exploration, nature appreciation, and cultural immersion. Finally, meeting with Professors from France, Greece, and Portugal and the reunion with PANGEA friends made the field trip memorable." (Mubariz, Applied paleontology, Pakistan)
